BOMAG BW 24 R (and its more recent iterations, such as the version RH) is a heavy, self-propelled rubber-tyred (pneumatic) roller, manufactured by a renowned German manufacturer BOMAG. This machine is widely regarded in the road construction industry for its reliability and its characteristic „compaction” effect on the subgrade.
Key advantages and structural features
- Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS): The operator can adjust the tyre pressure within a range of 2 to 8 bar without leaving the cab. This allows the wheel pressure to be adjusted immediately to suit the hardness of the tarmac or the type of ground.
- Ballast flexibility: The machine has a large ballast chamber (approx. 3.5 m³), which can be filled with loose sand, metal plates, and – in newer versions with a watertight frame – also with water, which allows the machine’s tonnage to be precisely adjusted from 8.8 to 24 tonnes.
- Two operator stations or a swivel seat: The design ensures excellent visibility of the wheel rims on both sides of the machine, facilitating precise work along kerbs and construction joints.
- Tyre sprinkler system: The pressurised system prevents hot tarmac from sticking to the rubber whilst the machine is in operation
The BW 24 R model is a durable machine. As it lacks sophisticated vibratory hydraulics (as found in steel rollers), it is regarded as a design that is inexpensive to maintain and capable of withstanding harsh conditions
